Open Letter to All Supporters of MAPA
RE: Closure of the Maitland Academy
Dear Students and Families,
As of Wednesday March 18th, MAPA will cease all classes and operations. The recent loss of the building space in Altamonte Springs, the move to the temporary space at the Congregation of Reformed Judaism, and the associated loss of students since the move have proven to be too much of a financial hardship. The decision has been made to close the Maitland Academy of the Performing Arts rather than incur additional financial debt.
MAPA has been home to some of the most dedicated teachers and families in the metro-Orlando area. However, the modest tuition and the small student population that make the school special have also produced a deficit. Up to this point, it has been possible to offset this deficit with fund-raisers, group classes and donations. But we have been unable to acquire additional students or donations to make up the financial short-fall for several months, and have reached a point where the cost to stay open is too much to bear. Every effort will be made over the next few weeks to make refunds available to those families who will not receive all of their prepaid lessons in the month of March. Please be patient as we work out the details for those refunds.
We realize that you may have many questions about the decision. You will still be able to reach the MAPA staff at (407) 370-4909, and your requests for information or conversations will be addressed as quickly as possible.
We encourage all students to make direct contact with their private lesson instructors, and make arrangements to continue lessons with them at alternate locations. It is our intent to reform the Maitland Academy for the Performing Arts in the future. We are in active conversations with the City of Maitland regarding financial support and a new school location. No timetable is in place yet, but we will keep you informed of any developments.
We hope that you will continue in your pursuit of the performing arts, and we hope to see you again when MAPA is able to reopen.
With Our Regrets,
The Board of Directors, MAPA
